Our Mission
To offer guidance, in line with the Holy Bible, to all who will receive, in order to develop disciples for Jesus Christ and to foster/maintain spiritual, mental, and physical health.
3 Primary Goals
To be a source of help, healing, and hope to the persons, families and communities who connect with us physically or via technology.
To attract more men into the body of Christ and inspire them to become godly leaders, husbands, fathers, citizens — men of valor.
To encourage and equip believers to recognize, embrace, and use their gifts (spiritual and natural) to serve God and impact the world with His love.
What We Believe
1. We believe the Holy Bible to be the inspired written word of God and the final authority on all matters of life. 2 Timothy 3:16
2. We believe that there is one God eternally existent in three persons: God the Father, God the Son (Jesus Christ), and the Holy Spirit. 1 John 5:5-7
3. We believe that through personal repentance and faith in the atoning death of Jesus Christ and His shed blood we are cleansed from sin and reconciled to God. Romans 3:24-25 Romans 10:9-10
4. We believe in the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Matthew 3:11 Acts 2:4 Baptism by immersion as an outward symbol of dying to the old life and being resurrected with Christ anew is given to believers who ask for it. Acts 8:36-38 Matthew 28:19-20
5. We believe that the sanctifying, regenerating power of the Holy Spirit is essential for personal salvation for His indwelling will empower, comfort, teach and lead the believer in the things of God. John 14:26 1 Peter 1:2
6. We observe the Lord’s Supper, understanding that the elements are not literal but representative of Christ’s given body and shed blood. 1 Corinthians 11:23-26
7. We believe in the Blessed Hope, which is the rapture of the church of God, which is in Christ at His return. I Thessalonians 4:14-18
8. We believe in the resurrection of the believer and the unbeliever; the just to everlasting life and blessings, and the unjust to everlasting punishment.
Our Story
We've come this far by faith!
As a child, Carmen Hickley attended the Church of God by Faith in Daytona Beach, Florida with her family. Over the years, pastors of this church included: Elders Nathaniel Scippio (founding father), Theodore Brown (Ruling Elder), Walter Camp, Clarence McKnight and Johnny Seay. In 1979, Carmen moved to Springfield, MA where some of her other relatives resided. Although she attended a church in the area, Hickley missed the “by Faith” fellowship to which she had grown accustomed. When her brother, Luther Hickley -- also a “by Faith” baby -- joined her in Springfield, in 1987, it wasn’t long before they decided to make strides toward starting a Church of God by Faith (COGBF) mission.
Carmen and Luther, along with other family members, began worshipping among themselves. At times, they gathered in halfway houses and had services with the residents. But what they needed, was a pastor. Eventually, Elder Johnny Seay (the COGBF National Evangelist, at the time) and Arthur Wimberly came to Springfield to conduct a two week revival, and to instruct them on how to go about establishing a mission.
Around 1990, the Hickleys contacted Elder Dr. Sherman Roberts, the COGBF Northeastern District Superintendent. Elder Roberts prayed, and was led to ask Minister Theodore N. Brown (son of Elder Theodore Brown —the Hickley’s former pastor in Daytona Beach) to shepherd the Springfield mission. Minister Brown obediently said yes. So, in 1991, the “Family & Friends COGBF Mission” of Springfield, MA was officially established. Members included: Carmen (Hickley) Walker (husband John), Luther Hickley (wife Monique), Natalie Henry, DeAngelo Claiborne, Jackie Henry and their families. And, of course, Pastor “Ted” Brown (wife Joyce) and their children. The Brown family would commute from Orange, NJ for a year and a half before relocating to Springfield in 1993.
One of the biggest struggles was finding a permanent place for worship. The first location was an office building on St. James Ave. After a year, or so, Luther Hickley and his family moved back to Florida. A few years later, the building was sold. Now the saints were worshipping in various homes. During this time many members would come and go.
In 1999, Elder Herbert Burroughs, pastor of COGBF in Newburgh, NY started ministering to his family in Hartford, CT once a month. Since Hartford was only about 25 minutes from Springfield, Pastors Brown and Burroughs would have their members come together, on occasion. In time, with the blessings of Superintendent Roberts and Pastor Burroughs, the Hartford saints became part of the Springfield mission. Services were held at the Holiday Inn in Hartford. The mission was doing well. They loved Pastor Brown. Unfortunately, it did not last very long.
Pastor “Ted” Brown had become a counselor at Springfield Alternative High School. On December 5, 2001, he was killed by one of the students. It was a very sad time for the entire COGBF family nationwide. But the “Family & Friends COGBF Mission” stayed together, and the members were a great support to First Lady Joyce Brown and family.
In the summer of 2002, Superintendent Roberts asked Elder Robert Kent of Easton, PA and his wife, Vivian, to visit the Springfield mission to minister to its remaining congregants and keep them encouraged. Cousins of “Ted” Brown, they willingly complied and were warmly received. In 2003, Elder Kent was appointed Pastor. The mission was renamed “Theodore N. Brown Memorial COGBF” (TNBM COGBF). Through many “ups & downs” and “ins & outs”, the Kents served faithfully until 2017 when Elder Kent’s health was challenged and he was no longer able to manage a pastorship.
December 17, 2017, the Springfield “mantle” was passed on to Minister Gary Dutton when COGBF presiding Bishop James E. McKnight, Jr. appointed him as Pastor. Dutton obediently answered the call and, along with his wife, Monica, began his pastoral duties in January 2018. Being assigned to Springfield was a special privilege for the Duttons. The Kents were their cousins. And, Theodore N. Brown, Springfield’s first pastor, was their beloved “Uncle Ted”. Honored to carry on the legacy, the Duttons gladly traveled from Union, NJ, to meet and strategize with Joyce Brown (“Aunt Joyce” -- who stood strong and held on to her late husband’s vision in spite of adversity). Weekly services were held in the home of Lenora Johnson.
In March 2018, through the grace of God, Pastor Dutton and the small, but dedicated congregation “crossed the water” and obtained a building in the town of West Springfield, MA where they joyfully gathered and served until March 2021. Closing its physical doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic that changed our world, TNBM COGBF became a church without walls and began to assemble online. Recognizing the wonderful opportunity to "reach the masses" via the world-wide web, in January 2022, the church was renamed Mass Church of God by Faith.

The pastor of "Shephard" Church of God by Faith, Elder Alphonso Boone (wife Lady Cleopatra Boone), was called to eternal rest on December 17, 2023. On the same day, Dutton was called to take up the mantle and, thus, became pastor of his "home church" in Newark, NJ. This appointment came twenty years after the passing of Elder Dr. Theodore Brown, the Duttons' grandfather and former pastor, who had lead the Newark church for over 40 years. Now, carrying on the work of great leaders who preceded him, Pastor Dutton continuously seeks the Lord's wisdom and strategy concerning the ministry of Mass/Shephard Church of God by Faith.

Reverend Theodore N. Brown
Theodore Nathaniel Brown (aka “Ted”) was born on May 15, 1950 in Lake Alfred, Florida. He was the second child — and first son — of proud parents, Elder Theodore and Vivian Brown. Ted was “born again” on November 29, 1976 in Newark, New Jersey at the Church of God by Faith where his father pastored. On that special day, Ted accepted Jesus Christ into his heart and began to live for Him, encouraging everyone to “serve the Lord with gladness!”.
In the late 1960s, Brown joined the United States Air Force, was honorably discharged after four years of service, and went on to the Air Force Reserves where he served until death. On Ausust 8, 1970, Ted married his sweetheart, Joyce P. Muse, of Hightstown, New Jersey. In addition to their three beautiful daughters: Corinthia, Tashia, and Stephanie, the couple lovingly fostered many other children over the years, including Dina Rodrigues and Chris DeMarsay.
After answering his “call” into the ministry Brown was trained and ordained by the Church of God by Faith, Inc. (COGBF). In 1991, at the request of his District Elder, Reverend Brown became pastor of COGBF’s Family and Friends mission in Springfield, Massachusetts. As a result, he and his family left their NJ home, in 1993, and relocated to MA in order to serve and build the mission.
Pastor Brown was a student at heart. And, after moving to Springfield, his education soared. He attained an Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts (Springfield Technical Community College, 1996), a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology (University of Massachusetts, 1998), and completed a year of graduate course-work in Mental Health Counseling (UMass). On December 18, 1999, in Atlanta, GA, Theodore N. Brown was officially ordained as an Elder of COGBF, Inc.
An active member of the community, Reverend Brown served as president of the Springfield Parent Advocate Network (SPAN) for two years. He also became a counselor at Springfield Alternative High School and “ministered” as a Family Resource Specialist — providing support to families of at-risk students. Brown loved his work and was passionate about each student he encountered. A sad irony. On December 5, 2001, he was killed by one of the students he was trying to help. This was a sudden and tragic loss for his family and friends, the COGBF family at large, and the city of Springfield, MA. *(see article below)
The church was renamed Theodore N. Brown Memorial Church of God by Faith (TNBM COGBF) in honor of Reverend Brown. Remarkably, through the grace and power of God, Mrs. Joyce P. Brown (Ted’s widow) remained faithful to the work her husband started. For many years, Joyce persevered through the “comings” and “goings” of various members and leaders. It is because of her faith, unrelenting dedication, and God’s favor that the ministry endured.
Thank you, Mother Brown!
In January 2022, under the leadership of Pastor Gary Dutton (Ted's nephew)
the ministry became known as Mass Church of God by Faith. Two years later,
in January 2024, Dutton also took on the mantle of his "home church" in
Newark, NJ (aka Shephard COGBF) which was previously lead by his
grandfather, Elder Dr. Theodore Brown until his passing in 2003.
Hence, Mass/Shephard Church of God by Faith was born.
